What Is Japanese Encephalitis?
Although rare, Japanese encephalitis is a severe infection transmitted through mosquito bites in certain regions globally. While Japanese encephalitis is not present in the UK, it is prevalent in numerous rural areas of Asia.
Getting the vaccination of 2 doses is your best protection against the infection.
What If I’ve Already Started The Course Elsewhere
We are aware of many people who have started their courses in London and surrounding areas but have been unable to complete the course due to the shortages. Despite this, our pharmacy may be able to help. Speak with someone from our team today.
What We May Suggest During a Shortage
Travelers and those exposed to occupational risks who cannot complete their vaccination schedule should be advised to contact their Occupational Health team. This will enable the assessment of any supplementary mitigation measures that may be required.
- Prioritise vaccine doses for those at the highest risk ie. Travellers going to endemic areas for extended periods of time
- Delay the vaccination until stock availability
When Will The Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine Shortage Situation Be Resolved
From our sources we believe the situation is expected to be resolved by March 2024, however, please make sure to check with us and this is subject to change.
What Other Vaccinations Are Out Of Stock?
Besides the JE vaccine, the Rabies (Rabipur) shortage is not expected to be resolved until June 2024.
