Understanding Dengue Fever

Firstly, let’s delve into the details of dengue and explore the importance of the Qdenga vaccine.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that is rapidly spreading across the globe. With a presence in over 125 countries, it is estimated to cause a staggering 390 million infections annually. While historically endemic to regions in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific, dengue is now making inroads beyond tropical areas.

The mosquitoes responsible for transmitting dengue thrive in urban environments, favouring stagnant water found in drain pipes, old tyres, cans, and flower pots. Their biting activity spans both indoor and outdoor settings, with a penchant for heightened activity in the morning hours. Dengue is caused by four distinct virus serotypes, and while recovery from one serotype confers lifelong immunity against that specific serotype, subsequent infections with other serotypes can elevate the risk of severe illness.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever

In some cases, individuals infected with dengue may exhibit no symptoms, or they may experience a self-resolving flu-like illness. However, for others, the disease can manifest with symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and skin rash. In more severe instances, dengue can lead to potentially life-threatening complications, underscoring the importance of preventive measures.

The Qdenga Vaccine

The availability of the Qdenga vaccine presents a significant milestone in the fight against dengue fever. By offering protection against the disease, this vaccine empowers travellers to proactively mitigate their risk of dengue infection. With its introduction, individuals can take proactive steps to safeguard their health and well-being.

How Old Do I Have To Be To Receive The Vaccination?

It is suitable for patients over the age of 4. It is a live vaccine, so you will need to have an assessment by one of our travel health clinicians to see that you are eligible to have the vaccine based on your health.

How Many Doses Do I Need To Complete The Course?

The vaccine is administered in two doses. Each dose requires a 3-month interval. We recognise that not all travellers have a 3-month window before their planned travel for complete vaccination. However, the positive news is that a single dose of the Qdenga vaccine offers approximately 81% protection against all serotypes of Dengue infection until the second dose is administered.

For those planning last-minute trips, it’s never too late to receive the vaccine. The second dose of Qdenga provides 95% protection from 30 days to 12 months after vaccination.

Is A Booster Necessary?

Studies have demonstrated long-term protection for up to 4.5 years following the second dose of Qdenga. However, as of yet, we can’t determine whether a booster is needed or not.
