Update (21st June 2024): We have good stock availability to support any urgent UK dengue fever vaccine appointments for patients in London and surrounding areas.
In its latest round of updates (3rd May 2024) the World Health Organization (WHO) issued its third position paper on the dengue fever vaccination. The paper focuses on the Qdenga (TAK-003) jab and its effectiveness for both local populations living in dengue-endemic countries and travellers. To access the paper, please click here and read the WHO’s latest published guidelines.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently changed the guidelines on who should consider getting the dengue fever vaccine. Our pharmacy in London offers the Qdenga vaccination. The jab is designed to safeguard travellers at risk of contracting dengue fever. With a greater number of patient groups being advised to get vaccinated, our pharmacy has sufficient stock to deal with the increased demand.

What Is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that is rapidly spreading across the globe. Dengue fever is present in over 125 countries and it is estimated to cause a staggering 390 million infections annually. While historically endemic to regions in Africa, the Americas, the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia, and the Western Pacific, dengue is now making inroads beyond tropical areas.
The Dengue Fever Vaccine’s History
The first dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia, was found to increase the risk of severe dengue symptoms in people who had never been infected before, leading to a requirement for antibody testing before vaccination. This led the WHO to impose strict criteria for developing new dengue vaccines. The new vaccine, Qdenga, has shown good results for two dengue serotypes but lacks sufficient data for the other two. However, a recent dengue outbreak in South America is providing more data, which should clarify the risks and efficacy of Qdenga and another new vaccine, Butantan, expected in 2025.
The World Health Organization’s Latest Guidelines
We and the WHO advise you to get the vaccine if you fall in the following groups:
A: For people living in high-risk endemic countries:
Some of the countries with a dengue-endemic status include India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The WHO has recommended that these countries should consider introducing the vaccine into their national routine immunisation programmes. This will consequently reduce the number of transmissions and overall risk.
B: For travellers:
-
- Those planning to travel to somewhere with a dengue-endemic status. Frequent travellers, long-term travellers, migrants, and long-term expatriates have a higher chance of contracting the infection.
- If you have had dengue fever before, then you should get the vaccine.
- The WHO recommends that travellers between the ages of 6 and 60 get vaccinated.
